Our City Expert's Tips

La Candeleria is located in a remote area about forty-five minutes north of Cabo San Lucas at the base of the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains. Here the local population of about eighty has been practicing healing arts that have been passed down for generations. Many from outside this town refer to the people as "curanderos" (healers) because of their use of natural herbal medicine and folk wisdom to treat various ailments. This is local culture at its best and worth a visit.

Buy it Handmade
The locals make several items that bring in tourists from all over southern Baja. These include pottery, baskets and what is commonly known as "ranchware." Bring some Mexican pesos to pick up some of these local crafts.

Local Culture
Ask the locals where to find the cemetery. There look for a headstone marked, "Rafael Salvarierra" whose final resting place indicates that he was 130 years old. Whether true or not, many locals are reported to have long lives.
