Our City Expert's Tips

The Chicago Architecture Museum has a small architecture-related museum and a very good gift shop (nice place to stock up on artsy souvenirs). But what it's really known for are its architectural tours, which give visitors a closer look at the city's world-famous architecture. Most of the tours take place downtown, but you can also explore the city's residential neighborhoods, historic cemeteries and parks. During spring, summer, and fall, the Foundation also runs a cruise along the Chicago River, with commentary on why certain buildings are famous and/or influential.

Shop 'til You Drop!
The store at the museum is one of my favorite spots in town to pick up original, beautifully designed souvenirs. You'll find a wide selection of Chicago books, architecture-related gifts and unusual jewelry, as well as postcards and stationary.

History Buff
One of the most popular tours is "Historic Skyscrapers," offered daily at 10am, which takes visitors through the Loop and explains why certain buildings were revolutionary at the time they were built.
