Our City Expert's Tips


The architect who designed this structure, which was called Sacred Heart Cathedral at its founding, was Irish-born Nicholas Clayton, a revered designer of the period. Architect fans will want to read up on his other work, which included magnificent places such as St. Mary's Cathedral in Austin and the Bishop's Palace in Galveston. Tragically, much of his work in Texas has been demolished.
