Our City Expert's Tips

Angeles National Forest is one of only few federal forests charging "admission" in the form of a National Forest Adventure Pass, which must be displayed in your vehicle if you are parked in the forest area. It costs $5-$10 per day or $30-$40 per year, per vehicle, and is sold at sporting goods stores, gas stations, and ranger stations. For details and a complete list of vendors, check the USA National Forest website. If you're caught without one, you will be fined.

The Angeles National Forest is home to one of the tallest mountains in Southern California, Mt. San Antonio, aka Old Baldy, which tops out at 10,064ft. It's a skiing resort in winter and popular with peak-baggers after the snow's gone.

The famous Pacific Crest Trail, which stretches from Mexico to Canada along 2665 miles, goes through the Angeles National Forest.

Outdoorsy
The forest is great for hiking, mountain biking, skiing, and all sorts of other outdoor pursuits. There are plenty of picnic areas and lookout points along the main road, the very scenic Angeles Crest Hwy (Hwy 2). A nice side trip goes to the Mt Wilson Observatory (open April to November).
