Our City Expert's Tips

There's nostalgia in the air at this endearing, old-time boardwalk with its kiddy rides, arcade games, tourist shops, and a small--but hugely popular--Ferris wheel. Unlike Orange County's big theme parks, everything is on a smaller, and perhaps more human, scale here. Incidentally, the area is built right on the site from which, in 1912, Glenn Martin launched the first water-to-water flight (going from Balboa to Catalina).

The Fun Zone is also the place to catch a harbor cruise or the Balboa Ferry to tiny Balboa Island across the channel. The island has some fairly choice homes and upscale shopping. There's even daily ferry service to Catalina Island. Don't leave without treating yourself to the local specialty: a Balboa Bar--vanilla ice cream dipped in chocolate and rolled in nuts.
