Our City Expert's Tips

History Buff
A plaque on the eastern shore of Lake Calhoun (at 36th Street) marks the spot of a Sioux village that once stood on the site. As a part of the Treaty of Mendota in 1851, the Sioux sold their land for 12 1/2 cents per acre.

Outdoorsy
The chain's cleanest lake is spring-fed Cedar Lake. The Park and Recreation Board manages two popular beaches, one on the lake's western shore, the other on Cedar's northeast shore.

Sports Enthusiast
Rent a canoe at the Lake Calhoun refectory (northeast shore) and paddle through channels to both Lake of the Isles and Cedar Lake.
