Our City Expert's Tips

Shop 'til You Drop!
At Neiman Marcus (5th and Nicollet Mall), the fourth floor is devoted entirely to sale-priced merchandise. Saks Fifth Avenue (7th and Nicollet) has converted its entire four-floor store into Off 5th, a discounted version of its tony template.

History Buff
In the closing credits of The Mary Tyler Moore Show, filmed in Minneapolis in the 1970s, Moore turns on her heel and tosses her hat in the air on the corner of Nicollet Mall and Seventh Street. That famous scene is now memorialized in an amusing-yet-tacky bronze statue of Moore, located on the same site.

Local Culture
An extremely popular branch of the Minneapolis Farmer's Market takes over the mall every Thursday from May through October.

History Buff
The lavish Young Quinlan building (9th Street and Nicollet Mall) was built by pioneering retailer Elizabeth Quinlan in 1927, and it was copied by stores from coast to coast, including Neiman Marcus. Y-Q closed in 1992. The first floor of the building is now home to Crate & Barrel and Polo.
