Our City Expert's Tips
Local Art Scene
The City of Ottawa runs a small, free gallery featuring works by local artists at 136 St. Patrick Street, opposite Notre Dame Basilica.
Shop 'til You Drop!
For funky boutiques filled with clothes and jewelry by local designers, head to Dalhousie Street north of Clarence Street. The Byward Market building and shops on surrounding streets sell gourmet foods. Try Sussex Drive for high fashion, art galleries, and one of the city's best bookstores, Nicholas Hoare.
Where the Expert Goes
Try the quintessential Ottawa treat: a flat, deep-fried pastry called a Beaver Tail. The version topped with fresh-squeezed lemon can get a bit messy; try the cinnamon-and-sugar version instead. They're available from a small stand at the corner of George and William Streets.
On the Town
From all-night diners and loud student hangouts to award-winning bistros and achingly hip lounges, the Market is home to countless restaurants and bars. Nighthawks flock here from all over the city on weekends. The main action happens in the area bounded by George Street, Dalhousie Street, Murray Street, and Sussex Drive.
History Buff
Explore the Sussex Courtyards, a series of six cobblestone passageways running behind the buildings on Sussex Drive. In Tin House Court, look for the preserved metal facade of a house once owned by a local tinsmith. The fanciful facade now hangs on a wall overlooking the courtyard.
Local Culture
Record your thoughts on your trip at Speaker's Corner, a video booth outside the A Channel TV studio at 87 George Street. If you're provocative enough, your words of wisdom may make it onto the air.
