Place Maubert

Execution Spot Turned Market

Off The Beaten Path

Address:
Place Maubert
Paris, Ils-de-France 75005

Description

During the 12th and 13th centuries Place Maubert was a place for academics to gather to debate, listen to lectures, and wax philosophical. However, the scholastic air didn't last and the square eventually became used as a place of execution and torture. In the 15th century, so many Protestants were killed, in fact, that the square became a popular site on religious pilgrimages. Fortunately, Place Maubert has shed this bad reputation and is now the home of a very popular open-air market.
