Our City Expert's Tips

The classic Sentinel Building at 916 Kearney Street is a North Beach landmark owned by Francis Ford Coppola and holding American Zoetrope, Zoetrope: All-Story Magazine, and the Niebaum-Coppola Cafe. Other than the fact that this building is one of the last examples of a standing flatiron building in San Francisco, this building is also famous for being the recording studio for the Kingston Trio and the Grateful Dead in the 60s, as well as having been used for recording Martin Sheen's voice-overs for Apocalypse Now. Sophia Coppola also worked on Lost in Translation here. Coppola has owned the building since 1972.

Local Culture
The building is green because it is copper clad and the copper has oxidized to this beautiful color.
