Our City Expert's Tips


Not a Ruskin favorite. There was a Tiepolo ceiling here before an Austrian bomb located it and the church in 1915. Here also lie the ashes of Venice's last doge, Ludivico Manin, who surrendered the spent Republic to Napoleon in 1797. (By the way, this was the church from whose facade the angels were falling during its renovation -- the ones that found their way into the title of John Berendt's book on Venice.)
