Beautiful Underground Rock Formations

Located about 25 minutes from Pigeon Forge, the Forbidden Caverns present a great place to explore the natural geology of the area. The caverns are made of flint, onyx, and other types of rock, and were once used as a shelter and source of water for Eastern Woodland native tribes in the area. During the 1940s, the caves were used as a place to make illegal moonshine, as they were hidden underground and provided a constant stream of water. Finally, in 1964, the area was excavated and opened up for the public to explore. The caverns feature stunning natural features such as chimneys, grottoes, stalagmites and stalactites, and a beautiful clear stream. Visitors are led on a tour of the caverns, which takes about an hour, so plan accordingly.
