Originally an earthen fort established during the Revolutionary War, Old Fort Jackson's brick structure was built in 1808, and was further developed between 1845 and 1860. The fort sits on the bank of the Savannah River and is surrounded by a moat. Visitors may explore the tunnel-like passageways that used to house soldiers and store ammunition and supplies. Inside, watch a video presentation on the history of the fort. Cannons and other weapons are on display throughout. Daily cannon firings are offered during the summer months.
Culture
Die-hard Southernists argue that the American war of 1861-65 was not a civil war, since Confederates were not trying to seize control of the entire U.S., or--they would argue--even of the Southern states. Rather, the argument goes, the Southern states legally, successfully, and peacefully seceded and formed a new country: the Confederate States of America. The war that followed was merely a sovereign nation's response to U.S. attempts to snatch away their newfound independence.
Hence, what most of the country calls the "U.S. Civil War" (which assumes that it was a single nation containing two rival armies,) is here called "The War Between the States," (which, as Southerners are wont to do, focuses on the sovereignty of the individual states), or "The War for Southern Independence" (which it inarguably was.) Had the South succeeded, this last is what we'd no doubt call the war today. (And if the American War for Independence had failed, it would likely be known as the American Rebellion.)
The point is, while Southerners today are used to hearing non-Southerners refer to the Civil War--and sometimes fall into this usage themselves--you can make yourself seem uncommonly attuned to the local heritage by using one of the names Southerners have traditionally used for the conflict. Or, simply call it "The War."
