Grayson Stadium is home to the aptly named Savannah Sand Gnats minor league baseball team. It was originally constructed in 1927 and was used for both football and baseball games. In 1940, a hurricane flattened the stadium and the current structure was built in its place; it was used for football and baseball until 1959, when it was converted to a baseball-only venue. The team's namesake, the sand gnat, is a well-known pest of the area that attaches to the skin of unsuspecting humans and bites. They can be easily conquered with a little bugspray, unlike the baseball team, which has won three South Atlantic League championships since 1993.
