San Francisco, CA
Valencia is a great place to see a different side of the city, where an eclectic mix of cafes, vintage stores, tapas bars, and funky shops (from its seedier history) collide. Although in previous years this was one of San Francisco's shadier districts, with crime and drug usage a problem, San Francisco's creeping gentrification has cleaned up the area to a large extent. Filled to the brim with bookstores, cavernous bars, clothing stores, and record boutiques, Valencia houses a distinct alternative to the more upscale Union Square. Head to nearby Dolores Street for a leafy, Victorian-lined avenue on your way to The Mission.
