An ornate red gateway spanning 75 feet across 102nd Avenue at 97th Street welcomes visitors to where Edmonton's Chinatown used to be. Due to the construction of government buildings and the LRT, Chinatown has since moved east to 95th Street, between 102nd and Jasper Avenues. But the gate is still worth checking out before heading east to find a good Chinese restaurant or check out the local markets. Built by a Chinese master architect, the gateway has eight steel columns and 11,000 ornamental tiles. The gate was built as a symbol of friendship between Edmonton and its sister city, Harbin, China.
