This beautiful park is one of the New York's oldest public open spaces. It comprises 25-acres of green space that sits on downtown Manhattan's front step and welcomes visitors and residents to the city. The park offers sweeping lawns, shade trees, winding pathways (within the park and along the waterfront), and lively outdoor concerts in the summer. In the middle of the park is Castle Clinton, a fort that was built in 1811 on an island just off the one-time shore of Battery; when the land was filled in to create the Battery that exists today, the island became enclosed within the park. Battery Park is a great place to visit to access a ferry of water taxi to explore the harbor, wander the waterfront promenade, or simply relax under the trees.
