Construction began on the lighthouse in 1855, under the direction of Major Hartman Bache and the U.S. Lighthouse Service. The inaugural light was lit in 1857, and consisted of flames from a kerosene lamp reflecting off of 36-plate lens that was specifically made in Paris for the Absecon Lighthouse. The light shone about 19.5 miles out to sea, protecting incoming and passing ships from hitting the rocky New Jersey shoreline. Today, visitors can enjoy the beautiful lighthouse by venturing up the 228 interior stairs for unparalleled views of the coast, walking around the cliff-side grounds, and exploring the historical exhibits in the Keeper's House Museum. Knife & Fork Inn

Knife & Fork Inn In operation for over 93 years, this restaurant is one of the oldest and most established institutions in Atlantic City. It was originally founded in 1912 as an exclusive men's club. During Prohibition, the club chose to defy the state's anti-liquor laws, and continued to serve liquor at its bars; when federal law makers heard of this rebellious club, they ascended on the building and destroyed the then-illegal bars. This incident didn't bode well for the club or its membership numbers, forcing it to sell the building. The Latz family bought the structure in 1927, took out the bar, and made it into a public restaurant. The restaurant stayed in the Latz family until 2005, when it was sold to local restauranteur Frank Dougherty. The iconic Flemish design of the building, including its castle-like structure, mahogany woodwork, and hand-painted ceilings, have been restored and now stand as an easily recognizable downtown landmark.
