Description

This well-known area landmark is one of the tallest lighthouses in the United States, and offers a good dose of both history and architecture for visitors. Construction began on the lighthouse in 1855, under the direction of Major Hartman Bache and the U.S. Lighthouse Service. The inaugural light was lit in 1857, and consisted of flames from a kerosene lamp reflecting off of 36-plate lens that was specifically made in Paris for the Absecon Lighthouse. The light shone about 19.5 miles out to sea, protecting incoming and passing ships from hitting the rocky New Jersey shoreline. Today, visitors can enjoy the beautiful lighthouse by venturing up the 228 interior stairs for unparalleled views of the coast, walking around the cliff-side grounds, and exploring the historical exhibits in the Keeper's House Museum.
