Chicken Bone Beach

Local Beach With a History

Address: Phone:
Missouri Ave
Atlantic City, NJ 08401
+1 609 441 9064

Description

This popular beach got its unusual name because many of the African American families who used to frequent this beach from the 1900s-1950s (they were relegated to this strip of sand during the era of segregation) brought picnic baskets filled with various types of picnic foods, including the ever-popular fried chicken. The beach was famous for not only hosting hordes of visiting families, but also serving as a venue for well-known entertainers and performers such as Sammy Davis Jr. and Moms Mabley. In 1997, the beach was designated as a Local Historic Site, and visitors are able to read the on-site plaque that commemorates the area's history.
