The building is Inigo Jones' Classical addition to the medieval Palace of Whitehall and was completed in 1622. The ceilings were done by Rubens at the commission of Charles I, who believed in the divine right of kings. Charles II celebrated the Restoration at the Banqueting House after the death of Oliver Cromwell.
