Description

The dome of Santa Maria del Fiore is one of the world's most famous monuments, a tremendous feat of engineering from the genius of Renaissance architect Filippo Brunelleschi. The dome was commissioned to Filippo Brunelleschi after a public competition in 1401 and it occupied much of Brunelleschi's life. Today, the dome can be climbed via its 466 steps and provides a breathtaking view of the whole city of Florence.
