Prior to the 18th century, Hawai'i did not have a written language, but shortly after the introduction of the printing press, it gained one of the highest literacy rates in the country. Maui's first printing press was sent to Lahaina in 1834. This building was the first home of the press; later it was used as a schoolhouse. Finally, the Lahaina Restoration Foundation turned it into a museum, displaying a replica of the press, a history of the building, and a few rare books. This is a non-profit venture. Donations are greatly appreciated. Since it is located on school grounds, it is requested that you call prior to visiting.
