Blue Sky is managed by the California Department of Fish and Game and is one of 119 ecological reserves in the state. The preserve's goal is to conserve delicate wildlife habitats in the area such as streambeds and chaparral landscapes. This reserve is unique in that it allows the public to access its land (most reserves in California are closed to the public). Hikers can enjoy the reserve's miles of hiking trails and can take advantage of the on-site naturalist who can answer questions and provide area information. There are even free educational wildlife/plant hikes offered on various Saturdays and Sundays throughout the year. Blue Sky is a popular recreation area for local residents, visitors, and is also enjoyed by many school groups; it hosts about 40,000 visitors per year.
