The Center for Wooden Boats allows visitors to get a glimpse of the past, when wooden water craft ruled the lakes, rivers, and seas. Visitors can learn about the construction and navigation of these priceless antiques, from how to work a tiller to instruction on how to shape a boat's oak frame. The Center aims to provide maritime education through hands-on learning, so if you've ever wanted to learn to sail or even effectively caulk a wooden boat, this is the place for you. It was started back in the 1970s when founder Dick Wagner needed a place to store his growing collection of historic wooden boats. Today, the center houses over 100 boats and serves as a public resource for anyone who wants to learn about and share the art and passion for wooden boats with the volunteers who work there.
