Description

Really take a step back in time when visiting the Centro Ceremonial Kohunlich. The center is at the site of a large archaeological site that is looking at the history of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization on the Yucatan Peninsula. Covering over 21 acres of land, Kohunlich is largely undiscovered and is surrounded by dense sub-tropical rainforest. There are over 200 mounds, most of which have not been touch, that are believed to contain artifacts and archaeological evidence about the Mayan civilization. There also are a number of pyramids, platforms and other pre-Columbian structures believed to have been built between the time of 200BC and 600AD. Kohunlich rests on what was a large trade route between the southern Yucatan from Campeche and Rio Bec to the west. It most likely was a regional center that was very important for traders and other travelers moving in the area. The Sun Temple is the most magnificent structure found here and a visit here, you will be amazed by the scale and history of the Mayan civilization that dominated the Yucatan for so many years.
