The Custom House was the first major public building built in Dublin. It was used by the city's tax commissioners but is now home to the Department of the Environment. Custom House took ten years to build, from 1781 to 1791. The outside of the building is covered with sculptures and coats of arms; a statue of Commerce tops the central dome. There is now a visitor center to provide an in-depth look into the history of the Custom House.
