Description

The cathedral of St. John the Baptist is one of the most important landmarks on the entire island of Puerto Rico. Construction for this cathedral originally started in 1521, and largely consisted of straw and wood. Given San Juan's location in the Caribbean, the cathedral was susceptible to hurricanes and other natural disasters and was ultimately rebuilt over the years, a final time in 1584. It's because of these multiple reconstructions that the cathedral has a unique blend of both Gothic and neoclassic architecture. It is located on Calle Cristo, and is directly in the heart of Old San Juan. Aside from the religious importance of the cathedral, the cathedral is also the final resting place for the famous Spanish explorer Ponce de León, whose remains are preserved as relics in the marble crypt. Today the cathedral is regarded the second oldest church in the entire Western Hemisphere.
