Felisa Rincón de Gautier was an important person in Puerto Rico's history as she was the first woman to serve as mayor for the city of San Juan between 1946 to 1968. The building in which the museum now resides was actually the former residence of Gautier. She was affectionately called Doña Fela for short by her compatriots, hence the name of the museum, the Doña Fela Museum. Inside the museum, you'll learn a brief history about her life, as well as her service in office. The focus of the museum here not only has to do with her public life including political memorabilia and awards, but also has a great deal of items collected from her personal life, including her wardrobe and outlandish collection of wigs. Doña Fela was loved by the people of Puerto Rico as she impacted their lives by trying to improve their everyday lives.
