Once the residence of Governor Claude de Ramezay, this museum chronicles the rich history of Montreal from pre-colonial days to the turn of the century. The historic building, which dates from 1705, houses an impressive collection of antiques, photographs, paintings and costumes. Its distinctive and simple architecture includes a sloping roof, dressed stonework and clean lines; it is a throwback to the countryside of Normandy. It has been rebuilt and modified several times since its original construction, but huge fireplaces and various kitchens from colonial times remain intact.
