Acapulco's Plaza de Toros is the place to catch a bullfight, a sport steeped in spectacle and ceremony, and one that is central to both Mexican and Spanish tradition. Matadors battle enraged bulls here on Sundays during the bullfighting season, which runs from early January until around Easter. Many matadors-in-training earn their chops in the ring in Acapulco before moving on to the bigger venues in Mexico City and elsewhere--assuming, of course, that they survive their apprenticeship. Some estimates suggest that as many as one in ten matadors are killed during their careers.
