Open since 1927, the Sacramento Zoo is home to over 600 animals, and over 140 of those are rare or endangered. Pleasant and welcoming, the zoo has lots of outreach and educational programs, and works to promote wildlife conservation efforts. In addition to a Butterfly pavilion and a hummingbird garden, the zoo features a reptile house that is shaped like a coiled snake. One interesting fact: the zoo's oldest resident is Hertimer, a desert tortoise, who over 80 years old, and has been at the zoo pretty much since it opened.
