Pack Rats
Activities Grab Bag
For anyone enjoying the great outdoors of Colorado, there are two sayings you'll hear: "Pack it in, pack it out!" and "Leave no trace." These sayings mean that whatever you bring with you to go camping, including your trash, you should carry out of the wilderness with you, so that the next group of campers can enjoy the same clean environment that you enjoyed. Unfortunately, not all campers comply, but you can set a good example of your own while learning about wilderness conservation and keeping the environment clean.
Instructions:
Assign everyone in your group or family duties for what items to carry to the campground. For example, one member carries the food, another the water, another the tent, and so on. In addition, every member should have a few trash bags with them as they hike in to the camp site.
While camping and enjoying the surrounding wilderness area, be sure to collect your trash in your trash bag. As a gesture toward preservation, it's general practice to pick up any extra trash you find that other campers left behind.
After you've left the camp ground (of if the grounds provide a proper receptacle) dispose of all of your trash so that none is left behind. Try to be the member of your group who collects the most trash to set the best example of good camping etiquette and wilderness conservation.
Conclusion:
What was the most unusual piece of trash that was found? What was the biggest? The most gross? The most disappointing (sad to see left behind)? If you did this activity at more than one site/destination, which one had the most trash and why do you think that was the case?
There are so many ways to practice wilderness conservation while camping, and learning to "pack it in, pack it out" is one of the most vital lessons.
