Planet Earth
The Tropical Butterfly House at the Pacific Science Center is home to literally thousands of beautiful, brightly colored butterflies. In this activity, you will spend some time among the fluttering butterflies at the Tropical Butterfly House and search for some fascinating facts about the life cycle of these incredible insects.
Instructions:
You'll want to take off your coat before going into the Tropical Butterfly House at the Pacific Science Center. The giant butterfly habitat is kept at a steamy temperature, full of moisture and high humidity--just the way the butterflies like it. If you look up, how many butterflies can you see? Can you even count them all?
Your mission here in the Butterfly House is to learn as much as you can about these beautiful creatures. See if you can find answers to the following questions and become a certified butterfly expert:
1. Butterflies begin their lives as what?
2. When a caterpillar is finished growing, it becomes what?
3. What do butterflies eat?
4. What's a proboscis?
5. What was the most colorful butterfly you saw?
Conclusion:
If you were able to find all the facts you needed to answer the questions--congratulations! You now know a lot more about butterflies and the interesting lives they lead! If you want, draw a picture of the most colorful butterfly you saw, paying special attention to the design, shape, and color of its wings.
