360-Degree View
Activities Grab Bag
Seattle's most prominent landmark provides a stunning panoramic view of the city. What if you could capture the sense of awe you feel at the top on film? You can! In this activity, you will take a 360-degree aerial photo of Seattle from the top of the Space Needle.
Instructions:
For this activity, you'll use your disposable or digital camera to capture the view--the whole view!--from the Space Needle observation deck.
Make sure you have lots of film (or lots of room on your digital camera).
Pick a place on the horizon where you'll take your first photo. (find something recognizable, like Qwest Field, Pike Place Market, or the top of Queen Anne Hill, etc.)
Hold the camera up so that about 2/3 of the picture is land and 1/3 of the picture is sky. Notice what's on the far right side of the picture frame. Take your first photo.
Take six steps to your left.
Hold the camera up again, lining up the left side of the frame with whatever was in the far right corner of frame #1, remembering to capture 2/3 land, 1/3 sky. Take your second photo.
Take six steps to your left.
Line up the camera again, using the same 2/3 and 1/3 rule as before. Take another shot.
Take six steps to your left. Take another shot.
Keep going until you've made it all the way around the observation deck.
When you get back to where you started, you should have taken about 20 photos (more or less is fine too).
Because you've taken the pictures at the same height, keeping track of what's in each frame, you should be able to print out all the photos, tape them together, and have a 360-degree "giant photo" of the Seattle skyline that you can show friends and family back home.
Conclusion:
Your 360-degree panoramic photo is also a great way to learn more about the city's layout and unique geography. After you past together your panoramic shot, you can also use a fine tipped black marker to label, in small, neat handwriting, the major buildings and landmarks around Seattle. How far does the view stretch? Are you able to see natural landmarks like mountains and islands near Seattle? Which ones?
