Island Sand Collection
Activities Grab Bag
Collect and compare sand from the Dominican Republic's many coastal areas. Take it home and keep on admiring it!
Instructions:
One of the most important parts of any trip to the beach is the sand, right? The Dominican Republic has many many beaches and it seems like the sand is a little different at each one.
Collect a little bit of sand at each of the beaches you visit. Unused film canisters--especially the see-through kind--make good containers for this. Use masking tape to seal the container and write which beach you got the sand from on each.
What makes sand different? Is it the color? Where did the lightest-colored sand in your collection come from? The darkest? Next, look carefully at your sand samples. Is the sand of some beaches courser than others? Which one is your favorite? Why?
Back home, it's neat to put the sand samples into small glass jars or vials and line them up next to each other on your bookshelf. You'll remember your trip to the Dominican Republic every time you see them!
