Artistic Crossover
Artist in Residence
At the Bayat Inuit Gallery, you will see works of Inuit art ranging from prints of paintings all the way to sculptures. In this activity, you will create your own versions of these pieces of art--but with a twist!
Instructions:
As you browse the many sculptures and prints on display at the Bayat Inuit Gallery, decide on the one that is your favorite. You will be creating your own artistic interpretation of this piece of work, but with a little twist--you are going to create the piece using a different art medium. This means you will create a sculpture if the original piece is a print or you will make a drawing or painting if the original piece is a sculpture.
Regardless of whether you chose a print or a sculpture, the first thing you will need to do is take pictures of the piece. If you have selected a sculpture, be sure to take pictures from all sides. If you selected a print, take one picture of the entire piece. If the piece is particularly large, you might also want to break the piece into quarters and take additional pictures. This way, you can get a closer up and more detailed shot of the print.
After developing your photographs and going back to your hotel, it is time to try to re-create the piece of art you selected. If you selected a print, you need to get out your clay and start working at forming the same image you see on the print into a clay interpretation. If there are several different images on the print, you might need to focus on just one to re-create with your clay.
If you selected a sculpture from the museum, select the photograph that shows the angle you liked the best. Then, attempt to paint or draw your interpretation of the sculpture. You might choose to add other images surrounded your interpretation in order to use your canvas to its fullest.
Conclusion:
In this activity, you made your own artistic interpretation of a piece of work you saw at the Bayat Inuit Gallery. Taking a three-dimensional object and making it two-dimensional, or taking a two-dimensional piece of work and making it three-dimensional, can be challenging yet great fun at the same time. See if you can you name at least three other forms of artistic mediums besides the ones you worked with in this activity.
