Julian Buxton
City Expert
Julian Buxton grew up along the Lowcountry salt water marshes around Charleston. Native Charlestonians rarely leave. After graduating from Princeton University and adventures in several different careers in locations around the United States--including investment banking in Manhattan, teaching at Pepperdine University in Malibu, politics and ranching in North Dakota—Julian gave into the persistent, mysterious siren call that Charleston casts upon its natives that wander, and came home.
In 1996, he founded the tour company The Ghosts of Charleston, now called Tour Charleston, LLC. In the years following, he produced and appeared on shows about Charleston and his company with The History Channel, HGTV, the Discovery Channel, and the Travel Channel. He and his company have been feature subjects in National Geographic Traveler, Southern Living, and the Wall Street Journal. In 2001, Beaufort books published his book, The Ghosts of Charleston.
Julian is an Honorary Commander at the Charleston Air Force Base. Over the last ten years, Julian served the Charleston community as Chair of the City of Charleston Tourism Commission, Vice-Chair of the Charleston Area Convention and Visitors Bureau Board of Governors, and on the Executive Committee for the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors (the oldest Chamber of Commerce in America)..
He currently develops programs for his newest venture, Buxton East Bay Theatre, and will soon publish two more volumes of The Ghosts of Charleston. He lives on Folly Beach, a barrier island outside of Charleston, with Jane Dog, his Springer spaniel.
