Kimberly Kradel

Kimberly Kradel

City Expert
Kimberly Kradel has lived in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1985. Initially attracted to the area because of its bohemian reputation, she soon found that this was a place that she could call home. Some of the things that keep her in San Francisco and the reasons she thinks you should visit: its large mix of world cultures and languages, the beauty of its landscape, the food, the coffee and cafes, the architecture, The City's ability to be sophisticated and funky at the same time, the neighborhoods, its literary and artistic legacy, and above all, a sense that magic really can happen here.

Kimberly Kradel is the producer, developer, and editor of artist-at-large.com, a website dedicated to the subjects of art and independent, unguided, world travel whose tagline is 'exploring cultures with eyes open'. She is trained in photography, painting, the written word, and five languages, and her interests and studies are as varied as Congolese dance and drumming to the lastest developments in technology. In the past her publishing experience has included working in the Lonely Planet US office, and editorial work at Ulysses Press, and on the American version of the Virago Woman's Travel Guide series.

You can check in with her at the WorldCafe, the discussion board on her website.

Liza Prado

Liza Prado

City Expert
Liza Prado was working as a corporate attorney in San Francisco when she decided to take a leap of faith and try travel writing and photography. Six years later, she has co-authored eight guidebooks and written various feature stories and travel blogs to destinations in Latin America and the Caribbean; her photographs have been published in books by Lonely Planet, Moon Handbooks, and several travel websites. One of her favorite assignments was authoring Lonely Planet's Dominican Republic guidebook, during which she spent several months honing her merengue moves, checking out the beaches, and learning the subtleties of the perfect curve ball.

A graduate of Brown University and Stanford Law School, Liza has traveled extensively throughout the Americas and Europe. She speaks Spanish fluently, Italian and French decently, and can order a catfish dinner in Portuguese. She currently lives in Oakland, California with her husband and frequent co-author Gary Chandler and their daughter Eva Quetzal.

Jerome Mayer-Cantu

Jerome Mayer-Cantu

Photographer
Jerome Mayer-Cantu is a photographer for Hawaii, San Francisco, Berlin, and Vienna. Born and raised in California, he graduated from UC Berkeley in 2005 and hopes to study international law in the near future. When Jerome isn't taking photos of pretty places, he can be found researching international law and/or working with various human rights organizations. Jerome has lived in Cairo, Honolulu, and San Francisco. He currently lives in Beirut, where he is a legal advisor for Palestinian and Iraqi refugees. He speaks six languages, likes surfing and playing guitar and is learning to play the ukulele.

Superhero - James Brown. While not a superhero in the traditional sense, one must admit he has powers that verge on the supernatural.

Favorite Food - Jerome refuses to prejudge a food on the basis of its ethnic origins. He embraces food of every background with a passionate love and eternal hunger - although he harbors a particular affinity for Mexican and Thai food. And Gyros.

Preferred Escape - Dhahab, a small bedoiun village/hippie enclave on the Red Sea coast of the Sinai in Egypt. Dhahab is so relaxed that cushions are laid out in beachside restaurants so that guests can fall asleep in the sun after a big meal.

Since San Francisco is quite a large city, it only makes sense that there would need to be multiple photographers. So we were understandably excited when we lucked out and got travel writer AND photographer Liza to work with us. Her beautiful shots and eye for detail were put to good use!
