Writer Barbara Strother, City Expert for Shanghai & Beijing, has worked in travel writing/editing since her first gig right out of college editing publications about wandering Indiana's back roads.
Not content to simply roam the Midwestern hills, Barbara followed her passion for travel all around the globe and holds a special place in her heart for China. She first visited the P.R.C. in 1993 on a study abroad trip and has been traveling and working in China ever since. While the rest of the world counted down to the new millennium, Barbara and her husband Stuart were counting the days until their big move to China with their twin toddlers in tow.
The foursome arrived in Shanghai late on the eve of the Chinese New Year to a city exploding with celebratory fireworks. They spent a couple of years living and working in Shanghai, where their work schedule allowed for frequent long weekends and extended holidays wandering around the Middle Kingdom before returning to the States.
Today, Barbara and her family spend most of the year in Southern California, but in the summer they escape back to Shanghai to lead American university students in tours through China, Korea, and Japan.
Barbara and Stuart Strother are co-authors of the popular Avalon guidebook, Living Abroad in China.
