Nan McElroy
City Expert
Nan McElroy became a card-carrying Italophile upon her first glimpse of Venice in 1995. She returned to Bologna the following year to learn the language (at 40-something!), and she continued to return two to four months a year, traveling throughout the country, but also making friends, living as a local, and therefore getting to know both the language and the culture from the inside out. She finally gave up in 2004 and moved to Venice where she now lives full-time.
Nan is the author of the unique handbook, Italy: Instructions for Use, the only guide devoted solely to the practicalities of Italian travel (the number 1 pick of About.com's Italy for Visitors Top Ten Guides). She created the Instructions after noting what critical information she was missing on her first visit there, and observing how many travelers could benefit from just a bit more understanding of how Italy works. She organizes travelers’ time there, accompanies private groups, and speaks her version of the Italian language to anyone who will listen. (In previous lives, she’s worked as an Avid (film & video) editor, actor & voice-talent, and is also the author of The Actor’s Guide, Southeast, still in publication for over a decade, and considered the primary information resource for any actor seeking on-camera work in the seven-state region.)
