Elizabeth Blackwell

Elizabeth Blackwell

City Expert
Elizabeth Blackwell began life as a Foreign Service brat, following her diplomat father on postings to Kenya, Iran, and Italy. But after graduating from Northwestern University, she was finally ready to put down some roots—and found that Chicago offered a perfect mix of cosmopolitan culture and laid-back attitude. Despite a one-year detour to New York (where she received her master’s in journalism from Columbia University), Elizabeth is now an honorary Midwesterner—and she’s got the long underwear and enormous down-filled winter coat to prove it.

After stints at Encyclopedia Britannica and the Northwestern University Medical School, Elizabeth spent almost five years as an editor at North Shore, a lifestyle magazine for the Chicago suburbs, where she wrote about everything from teenagers with eating disorders to wedding etiquette. These days, Elizabeth is the author of Frommer’s Chicago guidebooks, which gives her a great excuse to try out all the new restaurants, boutiques and museum exhibits in town.

Elizabeth is living proof of Chicago’s welcoming attitude—she talks up her adopted hometown so much that you’d swear she was born here.
