Jill Kirby

Jill Kirby

City Expert
As a freelance travel writer Jill Kirby was very recently assigned a dream job. She was sent to the Bahamas (and the Turks & Caicos) to research and write Lonely Planet's Bahamas, Turks & Caicos travel guide. Jill also wrote about these countries for their Caribbean Islands guide.

Over the years Jill has spent many happy months in the islands of the West Indies and Caribbean. Her trips have included sipping rum, diving and dancing her way through the Turks & Caicos, Jamaica, Barbados, St Lucia and St Vincent & the Grenadines. However Jill particularly loved exploring the tranquil islands and turquoise seas of the Bahamas and wandering deserted pink sand beaches in search of sunbathing iguanas.

Jill is an avid traveller. After leaving England and a career as a journalist on award-winning current affairs TV programmes, she took two years to travel the world. This trip involved long dalliances in the USA, Caribbean and South Pacific. Eventually she made Australia her home in the mid-90's. Here she has worked as a producer for Australian national and state TV channels, and written for other media including the British national press and the award-winning travel website wcities.com. Later TV projects included producing and scripting a city entertainment guide.

In between further travels that have incorporated months adventuring across South America and a sojourn in the glorious Galapagos Islands, Jill has written for a travel magazine and other professional publications. She has also written for six Lonely Planet travel guides. These include covering her home state of South Australia for the top-selling Australia guide, as well as writing about the state's high-profile wine industry and award-winning wine regions for Adelaide & South Australia. This latter job was especially close to Jill's heart and taste-buds. Writing again about the Bahamas for Code Green: Trips of a Lifetime That don't Cost the Earth was another recent Lonely Planet project.

Jill now lives in Adelaide, South Australia, surrounded by Australia's premium wine regions and miles of open beaches. From here she embarks on her frequent travels, works as a freelance writer to earn a crust, and is currently penning Don't go There! a book on real-life travel adventures with a twist.
